Summary
The Luge mountain bike trail is a typically quad-burning climb followed by a ridiculously fast downhill.

The Details

We started out parking on Modjeska Grade road, about halfway up to the start of the Santiago Truck Trail. The climb from our starting point is significant but generally mild.  The climb is arguably all fire-road, although the flat spots are in rough enough shape that you can enjoy riding them and consider it to be slightly a challenge. 

You'll reach the start of the actual Luge single-track in under 3 miles. It's marked by a good-sized US flag on a pole near a small peak. The flag is apparently lit up at night by solar-powered lights.  The view from this peak is typically OC-astounding - you have a sweeping vista of Orange County, with the Pacific Ocean off in the distance.

From here it's all good times and downhill. True to its namesake, the Luge is chock-full of fast, sweeping, well-banked turns.  The trail is generally smooth and most turns have a berm for a fast rider to slingshot off of.  Twists and turns in the trail are generally gradual rather than hairpin, as illustrated below by the closeup of just the single-track:
This type of trail may cause some forearm burn for me but fast aggressive downhillers will grow perma-smiles after the first mile.

When you emerge from the single-track, you'll roll down a fast (35 mphish) paved downhill to Cook's Corner.  If you have the time, I suggest a stop for some dive-bar food and a gander at the bikes in the parking lot. On a weekend the parking lot at Cook's Corner is like a bike show, the motorcycles there are unbelievable.

On our route we left Cook's Corner to climb back up to where we'd parked, a good 500 feet of climb. This actually felt like the toughest part of the climb (on pavement, no less) but that could have been the fresh omelet in my belly.  I tend to prefer to finish at the bottom of my route, so in the future I may choose to park at Cook's Corner rather than halfway up the hill.

Overall, this is a challenging ride with about 1300 feet of elevation change from top to bottom and an epic downhill segment.
